Getting trapped in an elevator can be a frightening experience, but it’s important to remain calm. Elevator entrapments are a rare occurrence, and in most cases, they are not life-threatening. This guide provides a clear, step-by-step procedure to follow if you ever find yourself in this situation in Malaysia.
Step 1: Stay Calm and Don't Panic
The first and most important step is to remain calm. Panicking will not help and can make a bad situation worse. Take a few deep breaths. Remember that the elevator car is designed to be a safe enclosure. It will not fall, and you have enough air to breathe.
Step 2: Use the Emergency Communication System
Every certified elevator in Malaysia is equipped with a functioning emergency communication system.
- Locate the button: Find the emergency call button, usually a bell or phone icon, on the control panel.
- Press and hold: Press and hold the button for a few seconds. This will connect you to a monitoring center, building security, or a designated emergency contact.
- Speak clearly: Once connected, state your location (the building name and floor number if you know it) and the situation. The operator will dispatch a technician to assist you.
Step 3: Wait for Help to Arrive
Once you have made contact, the most crucial thing to do is wait patiently for help. Do not try to pry the doors open or force your way out. Doing so can be extremely dangerous. The technician who comes to your aid will be trained to safely rescue you without causing further harm.
What NOT to Do
- Do not jump or bang on the walls: This can cause the elevator to move erratically or damage the equipment, potentially delaying the rescue.
- Do not attempt a self-rescue: Never try to climb out of the elevator. This is incredibly dangerous and is the most common cause of injury or fatality during an entrapment.
- Do not use the fire alarm: Unless you smell smoke or see fire, do not activate the fire alarm. This can cause unnecessary confusion and divert emergency services from a real emergency.
For Building Management and Staff
If you receive a call from a trapped elevator, here is what you must do:
- Communicate and Reassure: Speak to the trapped individuals and assure them that help is on the way. Give them an estimated time of arrival for the technician.
- Notify the Experts: Immediately contact the elevator maintenance company or an authorized service provider.
- Do not attempt a rescue yourself: Only trained and certified technicians should perform a rescue.
